On July 27, 2018, staff and board members of the Neuse Regional Library System gathered to celebrate and commemorate 45 years of service for Mrs. Agnes W. Ho, Director of Libraries. The ceremony included recognition of Mrs. Ho’s years of service by Neuse Regional Library Board Chairman Lloyd Moody and a special musical tribute.
The ceremony took on added significance this year; this will be Mrs. Ho’s last annual staff meeting and years of service celebration before she retires on October 1 of this year. Library staff and members of the Neuse Regional Library Board and the Kinston-Lenoir County, Greene County, and Jones County Library Boards were joined by Mrs. Ho’s husband Howard, former Board members Annie Kornegay and Mike Parker, and local performers and friends Rick and Jane Vernon. The Vernons performed a medley in celebration of Mrs. Ho’s many years of service to the Neuse Regional Library System.
Mrs. Ho joined the Neuse Regional Library on July 1, 1973. New to the area, she began her library career as a Reference Librarian at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. She was promoted to Head of Reference on August 1, 1980. On July 1, 1982, Mrs. Ho was named the Assistant Director of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. In 1984, she was named the Assistant Director of the Neuse Regional Library System, and in 1985 she was promoted to Associate Director and Finance Officer. On February 20, 1994 Mrs. Ho became the Interim Director of the Neuse Regional Library System and on June 1, 1994 she was officially named Director.
“I would like to sincerely thank all of my staff and the members of our Library’s boards for honoring me on this day,” said Mrs. Ho. “Our Library System would not be as successful as it is without such supportive boards and dedicated staff.”
Neuse Regional Library Chairman Lloyd Moody stated that Mrs. Ho’s tenure as Library Director and her service to the Neuse Regional Library System has been marked by high achievement and consistency.
“The one thing that sticks out to me about Agnes, is her pursuit of excellence,” said Moody. “So many people eventually get fatigued or burnt out. She is as strong today and as earnest with excellence as she has ever been.”
“I like to always encourage everyone to do the best they can,” said Mrs. Ho. “I have greatly enjoyed my years of service but now I am looking forward to opening a new chapter of my life with my husband Howard, our children, and grandchildren.”
During Mrs. Ho’s 45 years, the library profession has seen dramatic technological changes: the introduction of VHS cassettes, audiobooks, computers, and CD-ROMS; and then later DVDs, the Internet, and eBooks and eAudiobooks. Mrs. Ho’s tenure as Director has also seen dramatic growth in the Neuse Regional Library System, including the expansion and renovation of both the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library in 2008 and the Greene County Public Library in 2012.
