Dear Library Friend ,
The time has come to ask for your support once more. Each year we depend on your membership donations to fund the programming budget for Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library.
Our local Friends group has been in operation for 26 years. The Friends held its organization meeting on November 3, 1983. I gathered some figures for our last 10 years to share-an accounting of sorts. I hope you will be as amazed as I was at these numbers.
From 1999 through March 30, 2009, Friends gave $178,145 in membership donations. Those funds have allowed the Friends to sponsor an average of 30 programs each year, more than 300 programs in a 10-year period. Roughly one-third of those programs have focused on our community's young people. Your money made possible story-telling festivals, quiz bowl competitions, book mark contests, and visits from the Raleigh-based science museum - to name a few.
In addition, your dollars meant that Friends were able to bring a diversity of musical programs and travel programs to our library. When Dr. Engel visits, the Friends provide the funding. When Celtic Jam or Al Batten and the Blue Grass Reunion appear, they come courtesy of the Friends. These programs and many more are available to the public free of charge because of the generous support of our Friends.
When our library first considered expansion, Friends provided $25,000 to help purchase an adjacent lot for parking. When expansion and renovation drew to a close, Friends raised and donated $25,000 more towards furnishings. Not one dime of that money came from the programming budget.
Generous support of Friends such as you has made our public library one of North Carolina's premiere public institutions. For years, you have made this library a vital part of the heart and soul of the intellectual and cultural life of our community.
Though times are tough now, our public library is worth our sacrifice.
I know the Friends and our public library can count on you once again. as we plan for next year's programs, won't you mail your contribution today so we will know how to plan for the coming year?
Your donation is an investment that pays rich dividends in our community. Thanks in advance for your support.
Best Wishes,
Mike Parker
