LIBRARY RECEIVES HUMAN RIGHTS PROJECT VIDEO GRANT
Kinston – The Neuse Regional Library has received a collection of 12 films as part of the Human Rights Video Project, a national library project created to increase the public's awareness of human rights issues on an international and domestic level through the medium of documentary films.
Movies in the collection include Behind the Labels, an exploration of globalization and the exploitation of women’s labor in US Saipan; Going to School, which follows parents seeking education rights for disabled children in Los Angeles; and Every Mother’s Son, about the mothers of four men killed by the New York Police Department organizing for justice.
“These films offer insight into the issues people face around the globe. Winning this grant will allow the Library to help our patrons become more aware of these important concerns,” said Director of Libraries Agnes Ho.
The project was developed by National Video Resources in partnership with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. Major funding for the project was provided by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation. The films come with public performance rights and are available for showings at schools and civic organizations. The public is also welcome to check out the videos for free.
A complete listing and description of the films, and a link to programming resources for using the films are available on the Neuse Regional Library website, www.neuselibrary.org/human_rights_films.htm.
