LIBRARY AWARDED BOOK GRANT
LaGrange, NC – The LaGrange Branch Library of the Neuse Regional Library System was one of 500 libraries awarded a We the People Bookshelf Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The grant awards hardcover books to libraries and promotional materials in an effort to encourage young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes in American history. This year’s theme is freedom and the books include The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble, To Be a Slave by Julius Lester, 1984 by George Orwell, and 12 other classic works of literature in English. The grant also includes four books in Spanish translation. The materials will be received mid-September and will be on prominent display in the Library.
Activities have been planned to utilize the books and celebrate freedom. To kick off the program the Library will celebrate the freedom to read in September, National Library Card Sign-Up Month. A children’s story art program will be held on September 17 at 3 p.m. and will include a stamping activity for children. Older children and adults can enjoy a display on the history of the book and printing.
Agnes Ho, Director of Libraries, said, “The Library is happy to be able to strengthen our children’s and young adult collections and offer these resources to students to explore the very important topic of freedom.”
The Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library won last year’s inaugural We the People Courage Bookshelf grant.
