Summer Reading Program 2019

Blast off into a Universe of Stories this summer! Join us at your local Neuse Regional Library location for awesome weekly programs, exciting challenges for the whole family, and the opportunity to win amazing prize packs! Stop by the library to register for the program and pick up your activity booklet. Your booklet is your guide to out of this world summer fun. Registration and participation is free. June 24 - Make Your Own Galaxy Dough! Like slime? Then you will LOVE making stretchy, sparkly Galaxy Dough.

July 8 - Solar System Science! Learn more about the planets and find your place in space.

July 15 - T-Shirt Day! Learn how to screen print your own Summer Reading themed t-shirt. Bring a plain white t-shirt and the library will supply the rest.

June 12 - Big Bang Boom: Join us for this high-energy show featuring covers (with a twist) combined with hard-rockin’ funky original children’s music.

June 19 - NC Museum of Natural Sciences: Learn how to use your senses and interpret clues that animals leave behind. Compare frog and bird calls, identify tracks and scat, and meet some of the animals you might encounter in your own backyard.

June 26 - Casey’s Laugh and Learn: Come to a land where pumpkins are prisons, wolves sneeze down houses, dragons are ice cold, and SCIENCE tells the rest of the story!

July 10 - Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary: Come meet Ces Erdman and author Anna Maria Cancelli as they talk about parrots and their sanctuary home.

July 17 - T-Shirt Day! Learn how to screen print your own Summer Reading themed t-shirt. Bring a plain white t-shirt and the library will supply the rest.

July 24 - Summer Reading Program Party: Join us for a wrap up of this year’s program with out of this world stories, games, and activities!

June 10 - The Amazing Magic Show: Gather ‘round and be dazzled by this high-energy interactive show that allows children to shout out magic words, help the magician, and create the magic in themselves.

June 17 - Rags to Riches: Join us for a performance of a trilogy of Ananse the spider stories entitled All the Same Web.

June 24 - NC Museum of Natural Sciences: Learn about the solar system and what makes our planet special with the museum’s Zoom Out, Zoom In interactive program.

July 8 – Grey Seal Puppets: Get ready to be entertained by A Tangle of Tales, an imaginative mash up of The Frog Prince, Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. Each story is told in a different style using a variety of puppets.

July 15 – Fairy Tales and Dreams by the Sea: Meet some of your favorite fairy tale characters. They’ll sing, dance, tell stories, and more!

July 22 - Magic by David: Enjoy face painting, balloon twisting and interact with LIVE animals!

Explore your world here and beyond the stars during the “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program. Join us weekly for experiments, challenges, and fun throughout the summer! Summer Reading Challenge:
  • Read one or more titles below.
  • Answer 5 Discussion Questions, OR complete 1 of the suggested STEAM activities per book.
  • Submit to your ELA Teacher the first week of school to earn 25 PBIS tickets per book and an extra 100 credit in your ELA class.
  • Extra Incentive: A movie and popcorn!  Plus, a chance to win gift cards from Barnes & Noble and Walmart.

Greene County High School
Teen Summer Reading Challenge

Required for rising 9th grade STEM students and optional for all rising 9th grade students at GCHS:

  • Check out and READ a copy of DELIRIUM by Lauren Oliver. Students may check out a print copy at the Greene County Public Library using their student ID as part of the Neuse Regional Library’s StudentAccess program.  In addition, e-books are available at https://www.yourcloudlibrary.com/
  • Register for the TSRC program by signing up for a fun interactive workshop at the Greene County Public Library. It is a great time to connect with friends and have fun participating in group learning challenges. Plus there will be lots of snacks!
  • Incentive: You will receive an automatic 100 in your English class  & will not have to complete the Summer Reading Project at school.
  • Advanced registration is required. Call the Greene County Public Library (252) 747-3437 today to reserve your spot.

ADULT SUMMER READING

Sign up for our first Adult Summer Reading program which will focus on literature and activities centered around the program theme: Rediscovering The Civil War. All of our activities will focus on Kinston's local history during that time period. Our program will run from June 2 until July 31. As part of the program, there will also be five “Let’s Talk About It” book talks sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council; the theme is America's Greatest Conflict: Novels of the Civil War. The more you participate, the more chances you’ll have to win one of two prize gift baskets.

Adult Summer Reading Schedule

June 2 at 3:00 p.m. - Summer Reading Kickoff - Join us at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library as The Gunboat Boys help kick off our Adult Summer Reading Program! Mike Parker and his band specialize in performing Civil War-era music, the perfect way to get into the spirit and prepare for all of the events and programs to come!

June 4 at 2:00 p.m. - Sherman’s March in the Carolinas. Andy Bennett from the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center will discuss William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through the Carolinas in 1865 and the impact that was made on eastern North Carolina.

June 13 at 4:00 p.m. - Book Talk: The March by E.L. Doctorow. This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council as part of the Let’s Talk About It series.

June 18  at 2:00 p.m. - Women of the Civil War. Rachel Kennedy and Zoey Lee of the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center will discuss women’s roles taking care of soldiers during the Civil War. They will also discuss the role the railroad played in transporting troops and military hospitals.

June 27 at 4:00 p.m. - Book Talk: On the Occasion of My Last Afternoon by Kaye Gibbons. This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council as part of the Let’s Talk About It series.

July 9 at 2:00 p.m. - North Carolina and Gettysburg. Andy Bennett from the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center will discuss the 26th NC, which was one of the units fighting at Gettysburg in July 1863.

June 11 at 4:00 p.m. - Book Talk: The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council as part of the Let's Talk About It series.

July 23 at 2:00 p.m. - Deserters, Bushwackers, and Prisoners.  Rachel Kennedy, Zoey Lee, and Andy Bennett from the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center will present a lecture on some of the more notorious figures of the Civil War.

July 25 at 4:00 p.m. - Book Talk: Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles. This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council as part of the Let's Talk About It series.

August 1 at 4:00 p.m. - Book Talk: LIncoln's Dreams by Connie Willis. This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council as part of the Let's Talk About It series.
