Dear Friends of the Library,
Since the founding of the Friends of the Library organization in 1978, the Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library and its Board have contributed to the Library in numerous ways. Friends volunteers have assisted with programming and refreshments, fundraisers, storytelling, library materials, academic events such as the annual Quiz Bowl, literacy programs, literary lecturers such as Dr. Elliot Engel, musical programming from local bands, and much more. Whenever the Library needs volunteers or assistance with presenting these programs, which deeply enrich the cultural lives of Lenoir County, its Friends are always there to provide support for the Library’s efforts.
Of all the programs the Friends assist with, my favorite is the work we do with children. Do you remember the first library book that you checked out and read? If your experience was like mine, that library book and the ones that followed opened new worlds to me. I learned of far away places, animals, and people I hadn’t encountered before, which added to the wonder and amazement I received from reading library books.
The Friends of the Library organization plays a major role in ensuring that children are able to enjoy many activities at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. Whenever a child signs up for their first library card, he or she receives a complimentary tote bag filled with a new book, a bookmark, and stickers for the child to keep, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Children and their parents have access to multiple story times each week, where they can enjoy a story told by library staff and participate in interactive storytelling activities.
The Friends of the Library Board also provides funding to the Children’s Library for further enhancement of its collection and sponsors children’s programming such as the annual Storytelling Festival and Bookmark Contest, as well as celebrations of important yearly events such as Grandparents’ Day and Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Library programming provides special opportunities for children to bond with their parents, grandparents, family, and friends.
I encourage you to take part in making all of these incredible programs and services a reality for patrons of all ages in Lenoir County by making an annual contribution to the Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library. Renew your existing membership or join the Friends today; together we can make a tremendous positive impact on our Library’s ability to meet the cultural, educational, and recreational needs of our community.
