Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library

Dear Library Friend,

From 1999 through April 15, 2016, the Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library have given $276,353.00 in membership donations. Those contributions have funded, on average, 30 programs each year, over 500 programs during this 17-year period. Roughly one-third of those programs have focused on our community’s young people. Your money has made possible story-telling festivals, quiz bowl competitions, bookmark contests, and visits from the Raleigh-based science museum – to name but a few. From July 2014 through June 2015, over 24,000 people attended programs sponsored by the Friends.

The mission of the Friends of the Library is simple: Support our local public library and, thereby, enrich our community.

A few facts about our public library may surprise you. Our Library serves a geographic area that covers 402 square miles and has a population of 58,106. Of those citizens, 39,626 are library card holders – over 68 percent of all our citizens. Our Library offers a host of services, from books and audiobooks, to DVDs, games, and periodicals. We even now offer eBooks and eMagazines.

Your generosity means that Friends are able to bring a diversity of musical, literary, and cultural programs to our Library. When Dr. Elliot Engel visits, the Friends provide the funding. When Al Batten and the Bluegrass Reunion appear, they come courtesy of the Friends. These programs and many more are available to the public free of charge because of the generous support of our Friends.

Recently, the Friends added a new outreach program. We raffled an iPad to raise money to provide Welcome Kits to children who signed up for a library card for the first time.

When tough economic times hit, the Library becomes even more crucial to the lives of local citizens. After all, patrons can use most library resources without charge. Few organizations in our community are as open to all residents as the public library.

As we plan for next year’s programs, please mail your contribution today to help us plan for the coming year. The Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library is a 501(c)(3) organization, so your donation may be tax deductible.

I know the Friends and our public library can count on you once again. Please join the other 256 library users – 223 individuals and families, as well as 33 businesses – who have already generously given to the Friends.

Your donation is an investment that pays rich dividends for our community.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Best wishes,

Mike Parker
