The Blog

Once every decade it becomes a nationwide goal to make sure that every individual in the United States counts! The 2020 Census starts soon and all Neuse Regional Libraries are doing their part to ensure that everyone in our communities is included. From April 1st -July 31st, each library branch in Lenoir, Jones, and Greene counties will have a special area designated for residents to submit their census information online. We will also have staff available to help answer questions and assist anyone interested in completing either print or online census forms.

Wednesday, April 1st is National Census Day, and anyone visiting our libraries to complete the census that day will be eligible to receive various fun giveaways.

There are several benefits to individuals and communities when a census is conducted as thoroughly as possible. For instance, information received from the census determines the reapportioning of congressional seats. An accurate count means that North Carolinians will have the strongest voice possible in the U.S. House of Representatives. It also means that Congressional and State Legislative districts can be more accurately redrawn to adapt to population shifts.

The statistics resulting from the census are utilized in extremely important ways. Businesses use them to decide where to build factories, stores, and offices, resulting in new jobs. Local government uses them to ensure the maximum effectiveness of public safety and to improve schools and hospitals. Community members use the resulting demographic information to support local initiatives that enhance the quality of life and promote consumer advocacy.

The information received from the census is completely confidential and is only used to compile statistics. Personal data cannot be shared with law enforcement agencies, immigration agencies, or used to determine an individual’s eligibility for government benefits.

Neuse Regional Libraries look forward to helping everyone count for the 2020 Census! Household participation is required and imperative to ensure progress and support within our communities. For more information please call 252 527-7066 ext. 134 or visit www.neuselibrary.org.
