Youth Services Library Assistant II

Job Class: Part-Time (29 hours per week) 

Salary Range, depending on qualifications:  Starting $15.00 per hour 

Benefits:  Paid vacation and sick leave after the introductory period, and membership in the NC Retirement System

Direct Supervisor: Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library Youth Services Supervisor

Schedule: Includes one evening shift and a rotating Saturday

Job Purpose:  Under the direction of the Youth Services Supervisor, support the overall mission of the Neuse Regional Libraries by effectively providing library services to children and their caregivers.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Plan and present diverse and creative programs for children and their caregivers that include Early Literacy, afterschool and outreach programs, as well as other activities that support literacy.
  • Assist the Youth Services Supervisor with the Summer Reading Program and other special programs. 
  • Serve as an assistant for the Digital Resource Rover (DRR). Assist with program plans and serve as a buddy at specific stops as assigned. 
  • Designs and prepares marketing materials for programming and outreach events.   
  • Provide friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful library services to our patrons while working the public service desk. This could include: reference questions, reader’s advisory, technology assistance, circulation of materials, and more. 
  • Ensure all policies and procedures of the Neuse Regional Libraries are followed.
  • Performs special projects as assigned by supervisor and related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

  • Capacity to become familiar with the library routine and procedures in the area of assignment
  • Capacity to develop knowledge of library techniques, technologies, and systems, as well as emerging digital formats and trends
  • Detail-oriented with a demonstrated organizational ability, including the capacity to successfully manage multiple projects with timelines, schedules, and deadlines with little supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with library personnel and patrons
  • Effective communication by phone, e-mail, or in person in both one-on-one and group settings
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • A four (4) year degree or an equivalent combination of experience and training
  • North Carolina driver’s license acquired within 30 days of employment
  • Background check and drug test prior to employment

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:  Job involves a considerable amount of movement and activity.  Work routinely involves lifting or handling material weighing up to 30 lbs., using a computer, traveling to other work locations, and transporting materials and equipment related to programming and outreach services. 

Mental Demands:  This is high-level professional and technical work requiring sophisticated reasoning and independent judgment.  Work is performed with minimal supervision and allows for significant discretion and variance in work routine.
